Cyprus: registered unemployment up 9.7% year-on-year in October 2026 – what it means for job seekers
Official statistics show 7,790 people registered as unemployed in Cyprus at the end of October 2026. Media reports of the same release say the annual rise came mainly from tech, administrative and professional services, while construction stayed almost flat.

What the official figures show
The Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) published its registered-unemployment release on 4 November 2026. According to Cystat, 7,790 people were registered as unemployed on the last day of October 2026. Cyprus Mail, reporting on the same release, gives 7,099 for October 2025 – an increase of 691 people (9.7%) – and a fall from 8,366 in September 2026. The seasonally adjusted figure eased to 10,711 from 10,741 in September. Registered unemployment only counts people signed up at district labour offices; it is not the same as the official unemployment rate.
Which sectors changed (media report)
According to Cyprus Mail: information and communication rose to 565 registered unemployed from 390 a year earlier; administrative and support services to 466 from 362; professional, scientific and technical activities to 849 from 785. Wholesale and retail trade had the highest number (1,332). Accommodation and food services stood at 890, up from 852. Construction fell slightly to 390 from 392. We could not read the full sector table on the Cystat page itself, so these sector figures come from a media report and have not been checked against the official table.
What this may mean for international job seekers
The figures suggest more competition among registered job seekers in office-based, tech and professional roles, while registered unemployment in construction is stable. These are indications only, not a promise of jobs in any sector. For non-EU nationals, the EU Immigration Portal explains that the employer must first apply to a District Labour Office, where a labour market test checks whether suitable local or EU workers are available. The residence and employment permit is tied to a specific employer, and changing employer is limited (up to three employers, in the same sector and occupation, with a release from the former employer). EU citizens have free movement rights but should still check registration requirements.
What is still unclear
Monthly figures move with the seasons, so one month does not show a lasting trend. The official release we could access does not explain the reasons for the rise in tech and professional services. The sector breakdown was not verified on the official page. Registered unemployment does not show how many vacancies exist or how many international workers are being hired.
