Denmark: Ukraine Special Act residence permits can be extended until 17 March 2028
Denmark's Immigration Service says permits under the Ukraine Special Act can be extended until 17 March 2028 for holders who still meet the conditions. The assessment is automatic, and no application is needed.

What has changed
According to an official notice published on 29 October 2026 on the Danish authorities' portal nyidanmark.dk, the Minister for Immigration and Integration has decided that residence permits granted under the Act on Temporary Residence Permits for Persons Displaced from Ukraine (the Special Act) can be extended until 17 March 2028. The notice states that the new extension rules have entered into force. The extension applies only if you continue to meet the conditions of your current permit.
Do you need to apply?
No. The Danish Immigration Service will automatically assess whether your permit can be extended, and you do not need to submit an application. If your permit is extended, a new residence card will be sent to you by mail, and you do not need to have your facial photo and fingerprints recorded again. If the authority needs more information, it will contact you, normally via Digital Post.
Timing and your rights while you wait
The Immigration Service expects to finish most cases before 17 March 2027. If your case is not decided before then, you may stay in Denmark with the same rights you have had so far until the extension case is completed. If processing is not completed before your permit expires, you will be contacted shortly before 17 March 2027.
What this means if you work or look for work in Denmark
The notice does not introduce new work rules; it concerns the extension of the residence permit itself. Keep your Digital Post, address and contact details up to date so you do not miss requests for information. If you plan to change employer, move within Denmark or move to another EU country, check how this affects your status before acting. Every cross-border move or new legal work start needs individual human review, and nothing in this article means you are automatically eligible.
What is still unclear
The notice does not state the exact date on which the new rules entered into force, and it does not set out in detail which conditions will be checked in each case. It also does not explain what happens to people who no longer meet the conditions. For your own situation, use the Immigration Service's information page for Ukrainian citizens or call +45 35 36 66 00.
